Most automotive workshops and tyre shops run well on a piston air compressor, because their air demand comes in bursts. Once several bays are working through the whole day, a rotary screw compressor becomes the better machine. Here is how to tell which side of that line you are on.

What the workshop actually draws

Add the flow of whatever runs at the same time, not the flow of everything you own. Two bays rarely peak together for long, which is why storage matters as much as compressor size.

  • Impact wrenches: short, high-flow bursts on wheel nuts and suspension work.
  • Tyre changers and balancers: brief clamping and bead-seating demand.
  • Vehicle lifts on pneumatic release: small but frequent draw.
  • Blow guns and cleaning: continuous while in use, easy to underestimate.
  • Spray preparation: a steady, sustained draw for as long as the gun is open.

When a piston compressor is the right choice

A piston compressor fills the tank, stops, and rests until the pressure drops again. That duty cycle suits a workshop with one to three bays and typical intermittent use. Purchase cost is lower, maintenance is simple, and a larger tank buys you headroom on busy afternoons.

As a rough guide: under four hours of loaded running a day, 2 to 4 HP with a 100 to 300 litre tank. Four to eight hours, 5.5 to 10 HP with a 500 litre tank.

When to move to a screw compressor

If the compressor is loaded for more than about eight hours a day, or the pressure sags whenever three bays work together, the piston machine is being asked to do continuous duty. That is the point to move to a 20 HP rotary screw: it is built to stay loaded, holds pressure steady, and is quieter in a shop where people work all day beside it.

Tanks, dryers and filters

Receiver tank

Extra storage is the cheapest fix for pressure that dips when two bays coincide. Tanks are available from 50 to 10,000 litres.

Dryer

Moisture in the line rusts tools and spoils finishing work. A refrigeration dryer removes water before it reaches the bay.

Filters

Line filtration removes particulate and oil aerosol. Fit it upstream of anything used for spray preparation; we do not make oil-free-air or paint-finish guarantees, so specify what the work requires and we will quote to it.
